Can you tell a little bit about yourself?
Hi! I’m Rebecca – or Becs, or Moose depending on who you ask. Outside the corporate world, I’m all about adventure and community. Whether it’s hiking, biking, swimming, trail running, skiing or adventure racing - I love a challenge, early mornings, and trying something new. It’s even better when it’s shared with friends or family and squeezing the most out of the day.
How did you hear about FAT, do you remember your first session?
I became a FAT addict in 2021 thanks to the Wednesday morning sessions at Commercial Bay. Back then, it was Kevin and only a handful of us. With Covid shutting gyms, I had to change up my routine and realised very quickly that I could sweat outside 365 days a year. Four years on, those Wednesday spots are in high demand, with classes often topping 20 people, and now I’m a regular on Tuesdays, Fridays, and at Monday Pilates.
We have shared a few workouts together, what makes you keep coming back?
There are no “hit or miss” sessions. All you have to do is turn up and you know you will be pushed. The energy from Kevin, Taylor or any of the other instructors is contagious and the sweat and buzz (even in the storms) leaves you feeling stoked.
What would you say to someone hesitating to come to FAT?
Just try it once. You don’t have to come back — but you probably will.

Do you have a most memorable moment with us?
I recently came back from a two-week overseas cycle trip. After my first FAT session back, I was unable to walk properly for a week. You forget how much strength you build up from regular sessions. It was a good reminder that the reason I’m not bed bound after every session is because I’ve got stronger, not because the sessions ever got any easier.
Outside of our weekly session, what is your relationship with exercise/movement?
Someone once told me that the first 10 minutes of every morning is always tough – no matter whether the alarm clock is set at 5.30am or 7.30am. This frame of mind helps me roll out of bed before sunrise every morning and kickstart my day sweating. For me, morning movement is a non-negotiable.
During the week, that means girls’ run club (also going strong for four years), Campbell Bay stairs, ocean dips, rides, and of course FAT. Add in friends, coffee, a sunrise, and an ocean dip where possible, and that’s my ideal morning.
I’d say it’s almost impossible to have a bad day when it starts with salt — whether it’s from sweat or the sea.
Any movement goals in 2025?
I am about to start the Auckland trail series as an alternative to tarmac running. I’m excited to soak up the race-day buzz and be around other frothers. That, and hopefully a year with fewer injuries.
